*Checked on 21 October 2026 against Update 6.0 (build 0.10.0.653173), for The Last Caretaker. Forum dates are UTC.
Short answer.
- Scan the Continuity Token in the control room one floor above the Lazarus entrance elevator [S3].
- Build a copy of the token; it needs Quantum Crystal [S6][S8].
- Repair the gate terminal on the roof, slot the token in, and charge the gate.
- Pay for the opening up front. Channel37's cost for what it calls a large portal, presumably this gate, is 216-557 kWh for 45-180 seconds of open time [S1].
- Choose Destination, enter the address shown in your quest panel, 10.15.8.19 in two videos, and Activate [S6][S7].
While the gate is open, the console offers Recall, a trip back without paying for another crossing [S2].
The arch on the Lazarus roof is a Transfer Gate from PROJECT CROSSING, "an old network of Transfer Gates built to connect registered locations across enormous distances" [S2]. The Update 6.0 notes say "Portals are now called gates, or transfer gates, depending on where they appear" [S1]; players mostly say portal. The official quest name is First Crossing [S1].
Step by step
- Find the Continuity Token. LukaWoo (19 October): "On the next floor there is a control room, you an scan it there. The quest and the Voice trigger only once you enter that room" [S3]. Take the elevator at the Lazarus entrance, then the ladder up one more floor [S3]. ravensqd (21 October) describes it as one of the rooms overlooking the main hall, "nearest room of the entryway elevator" [S4]. In THEGAMINGTECH's video "UPDATE 6 IS HERE! The Lazarus Jump Gate Is Finally Active", walking in plays a message that the room "has been sealed for a very long time" ([4:36]) [S6].
- Build your own token. After the scan the game says the gate needs a continuity token, and at [5:03] "You can reproduce" it [S6]. The recipe uses Quantum Crystal [S6][S8]; see the next section if you have none. Update 6.0 added a Quest category to the fabricator and build menus for quest items [S1].
- Repair the roof terminal. At [8:09] the damaged terminal asks for "plastic, carbon fiber, and gold" [S6].
- Insert the token. The terminal reports "continuity token required" ([8:31]). Once the token is in: "Accepted. The rest of the system is" responding ([8:45]) [S6]. Since RC4 the token "can no longer be destroyed" [S1].
- Charge the gate. See the power section below. The console shows "the battery's charge, capacity and power flow" (RC2) [S1], and the gate lights show whether the gate has power (RC1) [S1].
- Dial North Bastion. Open Destination and enter the address. RC1 lets you "type a gate's destination address with the keyboard, using the number keys, period and backspace" [S1].
- Ancient Hare's video "Update 6 Is Here… and My Gyrocopter Froze" shows the address in the top left corner of the quest panel ([6:47]) [S7]. Ancient Hare said of 10.15.1.10 "is the one that I entered before" ([6:56]-[7:03]), then entered the address the quest panel showed [S7]. Check that the address you type matches your quest panel.
- THEGAMINGTECH at [18:05]: "So 10.15.8.19." [S6]
- Ancient Hare also says at [7:08] that "you have to make sure you put the period afterwards" when typing the 10 [S7].
- The console also has a Directory with "Start a search" (The Other Games, [18:30]) [S19].
- Go through. You have the open time you paid for; Ancient Hare had "like 3 minutes" on the countdown ([7:51]) [S7].
How much power, and what extra charge buys
The official figure is in the RC2 section of the Update 6.0 notes [S1].
| Official RC2 line | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| "Large portals have been rebalanced to cost 216-557 kWh for 45-180 seconds of open time." [S1] | 216 kWh is the minimum and 557 kWh buys the full 180 seconds [S1]. The Lazarus arch is presumably a large portal. |
| "the opening price includes the power to keep them running" [S1] | The open time is paid for when the gate opens. |
| "extensions only sell time the battery can power" [S1] | Extending an open gate costs extra charge from its battery. |
| "dialing no longer drains power before the portal opens" [S1] | Dialing costs nothing until the gate opens. |
Players' readings agree with the official figures:
- Mynaeos's German video, at [0:50]–[1:06]: "The minimum charge for opening it is 216 kilowatt-hours. This keeps the gate open for 45 seconds". At "the maximum charge of 557 kilowatt-hours, it stays open for a full 3 minutes". In between, "the opening duration increases linearly, based on my observations" [S5].
- During the Update 6.0 public beta (12 October) tersseli wrote: "Lazarus gate stays open 3 minutes with 0.56 MWH.
The gate's battery holds more than the opening needs. THEGAMINGTECH, looking at the battery at [7:39]: "That's taken 1 megawatt hour." [S6] ProRogueBear says at [1:14]–[1:18] that you "need one megawatt" to fill it and "about 250" kilowatts to power it [S22]. Those units are loose; the official figure is in kWh [S1].
Ways players charged it:
- Run several cables in: THEGAMINGTECH ran six and says at [15:08] each one "is inputting one megawatt" [S6].
- J-Dub Gaming's video "Update 6 – Don't Enter North Bastion Without THIS!" plugs a solar panel straight into the gate at [2:21]: "You can plug the solar panel directly into this transfer gate". At [2:46] it adds that "this only works during the day" [S10].
- Planning a battery bank to feed the gate? Bulk battery capacity is covered on Storage and tanks.
Where to get Quantum Crystal for the token
One player, blastingweevil (20 October), was angry to reach the token step without crystals and have to go back for them [S8]. Replies in that thread:
- Juggernaut: "Scrap Quantum Duplicators but make sure they are in your inventory when you add them to the recycling machine" [S8].
- Little Red One: scrap the duplicators "if you have any left from sending up humans", or send up T3 humans and "recycle the modules in the return pod" [S8].
- resechfamily: "Just shoot them will the sniper rifle and pick them out of the water when they drop." [S8]
- Darke (20 October) says "I recall from the forums that you can shoot the crystals off too" [S8]. Neoseeker's walkthrough gives a similar trick for another quest: "Look at the very top of the spires and shoot some down using a sniper" [S20].
- Darke (20 October): "I ended up with 12 collected from around the place as part of doing the quest lines" [S8].
Getting back: Recall
RC3 added "a new Recall button that takes you back to where you came from for free" [S1]. Channel37's announcement: "Once a Gate is open, the console also provides a Recall option that lets you return to where you came from without paying for another crossing." [S2] RC5 extended it: "The recall portal now lets you go through in a vehicle and only closes once your character has passed through, so piloting a drone no longer closes it" [S1].
- Mynaeos ([1:45]): the return works "without having to build your own power supply for the gate on the other" side [S5].
- ProRogueBear at [1:34]–[1:41]: the console on the other side "will use the" power of the Lazarus gate to send you back [S22].
- THEGAMINGTECH went back with "1 minute 13" left on the countdown: "connection straight back" ([21:47]) [S6].
- MartyS (12 October, Update 6.0 public beta) wrote that "the return trip drained my batteries all the way down" [S9].
Charging again. The Lazarus gate needs charging before your next outbound trip. THEGAMINGTECH after coming back, at [22:19]: "we need to recharge back up to the 216" kilowatt hours [S6].
What other sources say.
- J-Dub Gaming says you must charge the far gate to come back ([0:52]) [S10]. In that video J-Dub Gaming does not go through, and the claim conflicts with the official Recall [S1][S2].
- On the first day of the Update 6.0 public beta (9 October), MPZ@ asked whether returning takes as much energy, and SoulKilla answered "yes." [S21]. The Recall button was in the RC3 notes. Every RC up to RC4 is dated 9 October, so it is unclear which build SoulKilla meant.
Taking vehicles and cargo through
Officially, "You can even take a vehicle through", and the Gyrocopter can fly through an active gate [S2]. Ancient Hare flew one through at [8:35]: "Oh, yes, it worked" [S7]. On the far side the cold affects the gyro's rotors (RC2) [S1]. Flying in the cold is on the Salvage Gyro page.
Bringing things back. The thread "Returning from the cold." (20 October) asked whether you can carry everything back [S12]:
- CobaltCharmander: "Just make sure they're in a crate and you can throw one through. put one on your back and carry another one through!" [S12]
- PerspexAvenger: "Worked fine for me on the way back." [S12]
- root.s walked through with a backpack at "1700 / 200" [S12].
- Belle: "If you dont have a Donk, build one at the gate. You can load it up with boxes and drive it through". The Donk is the DONK-LIFT forklift. Pick the pallet up by hand the first time, because "the thing sticks to the ice" [S12].
- Belle also flew the Gyro through "towing two full boxes"; the boxes fell off but their contents were fine [S12]. A video uploaded on 18 October shows a player moving two boxes with a forklift: "the pallet is frozen to the ground, but I managed to put two boxes on there" [S24].
During the Update 6.0 public beta (12 October), MartyS found the opposite: "you can't throw containers through the portal on the return trip, tried it from each side." [S9] Ancient Hare says of a beta test that "you can throw them across the portal" ([5:26]-[5:40]) [S7], so the beta reports disagree. The posts above that say it works are from after release. A Reddit thread about the North Bastion return (not the full thread) calls the return gate an emergency return that lets nothing pass beyond the Caretaker, and the snippet cuts off before saying how to bring items back [S23].
Since RC9, "any cable you are holding is now dropped before you teleport", and a Gyro no longer stays tethered to a cable when teleporting [S1].
Charged but it won't open
A player asked exactly this on 21 October: the gate was fully charged and still would not open [S4]. The thread has no fix posted [S4]. Replies and the Update 6.0 patch notes suggest these checks:
- Did you build the token and drop it in the slot? Little Red One: "Did you make the key and drop it in the slot? Did you key in the correct comandantes (IP address)?" [S4]
- Did you set the destination and then activate? snorkybits says to click destination on the control panel, "then enter the address then click" activate [S4]
- Is the address the one shown in your quest panel? Two videos show 10.15.8.19 [S6][S7].
- Is there at least 216 kWh in the gate battery [S1]? Read it on the console (RC2).
- Is the quest showing its "Activate portal" step? RC4 added that task and fixed "several ways the First Crossing quest could get stuck" [S1].
Another possibility, from one unresolved report: Hephaestus92 (20 October) moved a save from the Update 6.0 public beta to the live build. The gate token, the heaters and the methane extractor then disappeared from the build menu [S18]. Marvin, in the same thread, had no such problem [S18].
Can you sail to North Bastion instead?
Boats are stopped by an ice sheet short of North Bastion. The player distance reports are on the North Bastion route page.
Across the ice.
- Typhoid Mary (18 October, Update 6.0 public beta) describes doing it by jet ski: wait for waves high enough to jump onto the ice, then "you will cruise at 150km/hr" [S14].
- Robert (15 October, Update 6.0 public beta): "the jetski works on the ice. Can do 135km's/h" [S16].
- MPZ@ (15 October, Update 6.0 public beta) said that "after an hour of trying, a player managed to get his boat onto the ice" [S16].
- Going the other way after release, Hephaestus92 (21 October) wrote that "At roughly 30km in, the frozen ocean turns back into the liquid ocean". Hephaestus92 estimates "about 1 hour minimum" and says the cold makes it impossible "without the admin menu" [S15].
Map position. MPZ@ (15 October, Update 6.0 public beta) gives the gate as "North Bastion Transfer Gate = Coordinates: (53.5, -1011.5)" and North Bastion itself as "North Bastion = Coordinates: (54.5, -1019)" [S16].
What is on the other side
Channel37's description: "The area includes a dock, hangar, central spire, industrial spaces, utility infrastructure, interior facilities, tunnels, frozen rooms, records, loot, enemies, and new story content" [S2].
Beyond that description, the island outpost, the dock and the base room, and the Bastion swarm and loot changes, are covered on the North Bastion route page.
On arrival the game warns, at [19:51] in THEGAMINGTECH's video, that "The low temperatures are starting to" affect your systems [S6]. Read the cold and heating page before you cross.
Gate changes during the beta
These are Update 6.0 public beta builds. Each row is from Channel37's beta post [S13]; the same lines appear in the final Update 6.0 notes [S1].
